Completed in 2006, Old West Town is an authentic frontier-style town situated on the Central Plateau of the North Island. The town is part of Mellonsfolly Ranch, which as the name suggests, is the folly and passion of a wild west enthusiast who spent four years bringing his vision to life. When you stroll along the well-worn boardwalk which links the ten themed buildings forming Old West Town – you truly feel like you have stepped back in time.

Visiting the property in the flesh, the passion and craftsmanship are clear to see. The authentic decor of each themed building, the attention to detail, and the varied western memorabilia will certainly impress. There’s a licensed saloon, a courthouse that doubles as a movie theatre, a sheriff’s office, a general store, a hotel, and a billiards saloon. Six of the ten main buildings offer well-appointed accommodation for up to 27 guests. There is also a commercial kitchen and laundry as well as a separate three-bedroom home for staff or overflow accommodation.

Previously run as a boutique accommodation venue for private functions and corporate events, guests often dressed up in costume to fully immerse themselves in an authentic western experience. Staff would prepare cowboy cuisine and offer guests a chance to try their hand at a number of western activities including gun slinging and horse treks.

If activity is more your thing, the central plateau has been touted as New Zealand’s newest year-round playground. Summer is for hunting, fishing, horse trekking, mountain biking and swimming in the rivers that wind their way through the valleys. And during winter, take advantage of the nearby picturesque ski town of Ohakune and the Mount Ruapehu ski fields.
